Historical Information
Channel Lake was formed by Wisconsin glacier melting thousands of years ago. Unlike the three natural lakes (Fox, Nippersink, Lake Marie), Channel Lake is considered a man-made connection in the system.
Prohibition Era: Channel Lake was famous for hosting Prohibition-era activities. George “Bugs” Moran, Al Capone’s rival, had connections to Channel Lake and reportedly stayed at a liquor partner’s home on the lake during the 1920s-1930s.
Located less than a mile from the Wisconsin border, Channel Lake became part of the popular retreat destination for Chicagoans starting in the 1890s.
Notable Features

Sister Lake to Lake Catherine β Directly connected to the smaller Lake Catherine, appearing as one lake with two lobes from the surface.
Sharp Drop-offs β Notable depth variations create excellent fishing structure throughout the lake.
Clear Water β Clearer water than southern lakes due to location relative to Fox River main channel.
Near Wisconsin Border β Strategic northern location less than a mile from Wisconsin.
Prohibition History β Bugs Moran connections add historical intrigue and cultural significance.
