Status: Non-native invasive species — abundant throughout the Fox Chain O’Lakes
Population Health: Extremely prolific with self-sustaining populations in all 15 lakes. No conservation concern for the species itself.
Ecological Impact: Carp feeding behavior uproots aquatic vegetation, increases water turbidity, and degrades spawning habitat for native species. Their bottom-rooting disturbs sediment and releases nutrients that fuel algal blooms.
Management: No size or bag limits — harvest is encouraged. Commercial removal operations and bowfishing help control populations. Complete eradication is not feasible due to reproductive capacity.
For Anglers: Carp provide excellent sport on light tackle. European-style carp fishing with hair rigs, boilies, and specialized gear is a growing pursuit. They fight hard, grow large, and are available year-round.
