Historical Information
The Town of Fox Lake was incorporated in 1907 to avoid county raids on resorts during the early tourism era. Fox and Grass Lake were famous in the 1890s for their spectacular Egyptian Lotus beds that attracted Chicago tourists by train.
The railroad development in 1901, when the Milwaukee Road railroad crossed the Chain, led to a tourism boom. The Nippersink Point station became the center of the Fox Lake community.
The Chain O’Lakes system was formed by Wisconsin glacier melting thousands of years ago. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes including the Miami, Mascouten, and Potawatomi.
