Historical Information

Lake Marie is one of three natural water bodies in the Chain, formed by Wisconsin glacier melting thousands of years ago. Explorers Joliet and Marquette passed through the region in 1673 during their Illinois explorations.

The Chain O’Lakes State Park was established in 1945 and borders Lake Marie along with Grass Lake and Nippersink Lake. The park features an 80-acre nature preserve and has identified nearly 200 bird species in the area.

The lake features a clean sand bottom contributing to its exceptional water clarity. Originally inhabited by Miami, Mascouten, and Potawatomi tribes.
