Every summer, thousands of Chicagoans load up the car and drive three hours to Wisconsin Dells or Lake Geneva. And those are fine destinations. But there’s a massive, connected lake system sitting barely an hour north of the city that most people in the metro area have never even heard of — and it might be the best-kept secret in the Midwest.
The Fox Chain O’Lakes is 15 interconnected lakes and rivers covering more than 7,100 acres of navigable water, with 488 miles of shoreline. It’s the busiest inland recreational waterway per acre in the United States. And it’s right here in Lake and McHenry counties, about 60 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.
What makes it different
The Fox Chain isn’t a resort town with an admission price. It’s a real, working lake community — marinas, bait shops, waterfront bars, family restaurants, and neighborhoods where people wave from their docks. You can launch a boat, rent a pontoon, paddle a kayak, fish for walleye, eat lunch at a dock-up restaurant, and be home in time for dinner. Or stay the weekend and barely scratch the surface.
The water itself is the main attraction. Nine of the lakes are connected, meaning you can cruise from Pistakee Lake to Grass Lake to Fox Lake to Nippersink and beyond without ever trailering your boat. That kind of connected waterway is rare — and it’s what gives the Chain its character. Every bend opens up a different shoreline, a different vibe.
The fishing is world-class — seriously
The Fox Chain is an Illinois DNR-recognized premier fishery. Walleye, northern pike, muskie, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish — it’s all here, and it’s all good. Trophy walleye over 25 inches come out of these lakes regularly. Northern pike push past 40 inches. Muskie hunters target 48-inch-plus fish in the fall.
There are more than 20 organized fishing tournaments on the Chain every year, from high school bass competitions to serious walleye circuits. And if you just want to wet a line with your kids on a Saturday morning, the State Park shoreline and public piers are free and easy.

Waterfront dining you can’t get in the Dells
One of the best things about the Fox Chain is the food scene on the water. Multiple restaurants have boat slips — pull up, tie off, and grab a table with a lake view. Some of the best meals in Lake County happen at tables you reached by water.
There’s no chain-restaurant boardwalk here. These are local spots — family-owned bars and grills, lakefront patios, and places where the regulars know the bartender’s name. The vibe is more "lake life" than "tourist corridor," and that’s exactly the point.

Chain O’Lakes State Park is an anchor
The 2,793-acre Chain O’Lakes State Park sits on the northwest corner of the system, bordering Grass Lake, Marie Lake, and Nippersink Lake. It has 237 camping sites, hiking trails, boat launches, picnic areas, and some of the best shoreline fishing access on the Chain.
If you want a full weekend outdoors without the three-hour drive, this is it. And unlike some state parks in the region, it’s big enough that you don’t feel like you’re on top of everyone else.
Events all summer long
The Chain isn’t quiet. Friday Night Live brings live music to Lakefront Park in Fox Lake every Friday night through the summer. Celebrate Fox Lake is a full-day festival with fireworks over the water. The Cardboard Boat Race is exactly what it sounds like — and it’s hilarious. Fishing tournaments run monthly. And that’s just Fox Lake — the surrounding communities of Antioch, Spring Grove, Round Lake, and Wauconda all have their own event calendars adding to the mix.
