From fishing derbies and Friday night concerts to boat parades and full-blown festivals, there’s something on the calendar almost every weekend from now through fall. Here’s a look at what’s coming up.

Fox Lake Polar Plunge β€” March 22

The annual Polar Plunge kicks off the season the hard way β€” by jumping into the lake while it’s still cold enough to make you question your choices. It’s a tradition, it’s for charity, and it’s more fun to watch than it sounds. Head to Lakefront Park for the action.

American White Pelican Migration β€” Late March through mid-April

Every spring, massive flocks of American White Pelicans pass through the Chain O’Lakes on their migration north. These are enormous birds β€” nine-foot wingspans β€” and they tend to gather on Grass Lake and Nippersink Lake in groups that can number in the hundreds. It’s one of the most unexpected wildlife events in northern Illinois and well worth a trip to the shoreline with binoculars. Learn more in our wildlife and nature guide.

Father’s Day Fishing Derby β€” June 20

Lakefront Park in Fox Lake hosts the annual Father’s Day Fishing Derby. Grab the kids, grab the rods, and spend the morning competing for bragging rights on Nippersink Lake. It’s free, it’s fun, and it’s one of the best ways to kick off summer on the Chain.

Celebrate Fox Lake β€” June 27

The big one. Celebrate Fox Lake is the village’s signature summer festival β€” live music, food vendors, carnival rides, games, and fireworks over the water. It takes over Lakefront Park for a full day and draws crowds from across the region. Mark it on your calendar early.

Fox Lake Friday Night Live β€” July through August

The new outdoor amphitheater at Lakefront Park hosts a weekly summer concert series every Friday night from early July through mid-August. Each week has a different theme β€” from classic rock to Mardi Gras night to a season finale blowout. Bring a blanket, grab food from the vendors, and settle in. The kids run around on the lawn while you actually get to sit and listen to live music. It’s become one of the Chain’s best weekly traditions.

Cardboard Boat Race β€” August 8

Exactly what it sounds like. Build a boat out of cardboard, put it in the lake, and try not to sink. It’s hilarious, it’s chaotic, and the crowd at Lakefront Park loves every minute of it. Teams get creative with their designs, and the sinking is half the fun.

Richardson Adventure Farm β€” September through October

Richardson Adventure Farm in Spring Grove opens every fall with the World’s Largest Corn Maze, plus zip lines, giant slides, sunflower fields, pig races, and fresh donuts. Flashlight maze nights on weekends are a hit with older kids and teenagers. It’s about six miles west of Fox Lake on Route 12.

Pumpkin Jubilee and Festival of Lights

As the season winds down, Fox Lake keeps things going with the Pumpkin Jubilee in the fall and the Festival of Lights heading into winter. Both events center around Lakefront Park and give families a reason to come back to the Chain after the boats are out of the water. This list will keep growing as more events are announced throughout the season. Follow us on Facebook and check back here for updates.
